Objective
Your peaceful boat tour through Bigfoot country does not remain peaceful for very long.
After your boat loses power and runs out of fuel, your team is stranded deep in the swamp. To get moving again, you will need to reach a nearby Bigfoot research station, follow the work of a scientist who has been studying the creature, and locate the supplies needed to return safely.
Unfortunately, the recent Bigfoot sightings may have been more than rumors. As darkness settles over the swamp, your team must uncover what the scientist discovered, refuel the boat, and get out before Bigfoot finds you.
Our Experience
We had fun playing Bigfoot: Secrets of the Swamp at Escape Ventures in Orlando, and we recommend it with a Fun Factor of 7.
That Fun Factor is based on the varied and engaging set, the physical journey through the environment, the substantial amount of puzzle content, the longer 90-minute game time, and the tension created by several close encounters with Bigfoot.
Escape Ventures has several locations in the Orlando area. This one is on International Drive, so make sure you are heading to the correct address when planning your visit.
The biggest strength of the experience is the setting. Players begin their adventure aboard a boat and then move through the swamp, research areas, and other spaces in ways that generally feel natural to the story. It did not take long before we forgot that we were actually playing inside a strip mall on International Drive.
The environment is fun to explore, and the extended game time gives the experience room to develop. We tend to enjoy longer escape rooms, particularly when the additional time is supported by a substantial set and enough content to justify it. That is the case here.
Puzzles and Game Flow
There is a lot to do during Bigfoot: Secrets of the Swamp.
The puzzles include observation, counting, association, sequencing, logic, listening, directional inputs, and several tactile or physical interactions. Many use recognizable escape-room mechanics, and experienced players will probably find much of the puzzle language familiar.
One puzzle later in the game used sound and Bigfoot-related evidence in a way we had not encountered before. Finding a genuinely different puzzle mechanic after playing hundreds of escape rooms is always appreciated, and this one also fit naturally within the theme.
The score is moderated somewhat because, although there is a substantial amount of puzzle content, many of the individual puzzles feel more conventionally “escape roomy” than the environment surrounding them. The experience’s strongest identity comes from its set, physical progression, and Bigfoot encounters rather than from consistently novel puzzle design.
The game also makes effective use of Bigfoot to direct the flow of players through the experience. When Bigfoot appears and begins moving toward you, your natural reaction is to go somewhere else—and quickly.
That allows Escape Ventures to guide players from one location to another without making those transitions feel like arbitrary gating. Bigfoot is not simply there to provide a jump scare. The character is part of the game structure and helps make your movement through the swamp feel more organic.
Hints and other communication are delivered through the tour’s radio system, which helps preserve the setting while still allowing the game guide to keep the experience moving.
Scares, Tension, and Bigfoot
Bigfoot: Secrets of the Swamp is not a horror room, but it can be scary.
There are moments of heightened tension, jump scares, actor interaction, and a chase sequence. Bigfoot may get close, and the encounters are designed to make players move.
While we were waiting to play another room at Escape Ventures, we saw a group arrive for Bigfoot who appeared genuinely concerned that they had signed up for something too frightening. We saw them again afterward, and they had clearly had a terrific time.
That seems like a fair description of the scare level. The experience wants to raise your pulse and make you feel as though something large may be following you through the swamp, but it is intended to be adventurous and exciting rather than disturbing or gruesome.
Players who strongly dislike jump scares, being chased, or close actor encounters should still take the warning seriously. Everyone else may find that the added adrenaline is one of the room’s highlights.
Team Size and Difficulty
Escape Ventures permits teams of 2 to 8 players. We recommend 2 to 4.
We played as two experienced players and were able to complete the experience with a lot of time remaining. Two players will remain busy throughout the game, particularly because there is a substantial amount of puzzle content and some searching to be done.
Three or four players should provide a little more coverage without making the physical spaces feel overly crowded. Larger groups may find that there is not enough room for everyone to remain equally involved during some portions of the experience.
We would describe the overall difficulty as Basic tointermediate. Most of the individual puzzle mechanics are approachable, although the amount of content, occasional darkness, physical movement, and moments of tension can make the experience feel more challenging.
Players should also be prepared for some climbing and crawling.
Final Thoughts
The highlight of Bigfoot: Secrets of the Swamp is the world Escape Ventures has created and the way players physically move through it.
The boat, swamp environment, research storyline, and Bigfoot encounters combine to place players in a scenario they are unlikely to experience in an ordinary escape room. There is plenty of puzzle content, although many of those puzzles rely on familiar mechanics. The set, extended game time, and actor-driven progression are what make the experience stand out.
We recommend Bigfoot: Secrets of the Swamp particularly for players who enjoy longer games, physical exploration, detailed environments, and a little adrenaline mixed into their escape rooms.
Many thanks to Escape Ventures for allowing us to take photographs and some video inside portions of Bigfoot: Secrets of the Swamp.
As usual, we do not want to give away any puzzles or solutions, so our footage is limited to showing what certain spaces look like when players first enter them. Escape Ventures’ staff reset the room before we took our photographs and video, which we always appreciate because it helps ensure that we do not accidentally reveal a spoiler.
