Horror Theme: No.

Difficulty: Advanced

We had fun playing Battleship at Unreal Escapes on Staten Island and HIGHLY recommend it, giving it a Fun Factor of 8. Our recommendation is primarily due to the impressively detailed and authentic battleship-themed set, engaging game flow, and effective and immersive integration of technology.

Authentic set pieces, screens and prop operation.

The scenario presents the intense reality of World War III breaking out, leaving your team aboard the compromised U.S.S. Staten Island. Your mission: regain control of the ship, arm its missiles, and save the country. Sabotage has been strategically placed in the form of puzzles, which must be solved to follow procedures essential for success.

We rated the overall difficulty as advanced, though the initial gameplay is closer to intermediate. Battleship can accommodate groups from 2 to 11 players. While challenging, the game is manageable for two experienced players. However, we believe that the ideal team size is 3 to 4 players, balancing the puzzles and set comfortably. Additionally, groups of up to 4 players benefit from a fixed pricing structure, making it even more appealing. Larger groups (5-6) may occasionally feel a bit cramped at the outset of the game but will still have enough content to remain engaged and contributing as the scenario progresses.

The set stands out among the navy-themed escape rooms we've experienced. It's clear that meticulous research and careful craftsmanship went into its design, making the set feel authentic. Initially, we assumed much of the intricate detailing was decorative; instead, we found almost every element functional and immersive, greatly enhancing our experience. Indeed, the game designer told me that they toured a battleship and took note of many details – and aimed to make the set and puzzles feel authentic, yet fun for an escape room.

Gameplay momentum builds steadily, beginning isolated from the weapons system and intensifying to a climactic sequence of activating the ship, targeting, and deploying missiles. High-definition video, custom audio cues, and large-scale props effectively support this progression, fully immersing us to the point where we forget we are in a building on Staten Island!

Target aquired!

The room provides ample tasks to keep larger teams engaged, benefiting from the authentic battleship dynamic, where multiple crew members manage various stations. No crawling or climbing is required, but moderate physical activity added to our excitement and kept us engaged. The hint system is versatile, delivered organically by crew messages, via screen from the game host, or occasionally through a "god mic.”

Parking at Unreal Escapes was easy, with several available spots in their parking lot during our visit.

If you’re near Staten Island in the NY/NJ area, Battleship offers an engaging, memorable experience worth your time. Unreal Escapes currently has one other escape room, Disco 54 NYC—a disco-era experience inspired by the infamous Studio 54, which we also enjoyed and plan to review soon. Let them know you found them through Fun Factor Escape Room Reviews, and we'd love to hear your thoughts! And of course – HAVE FUN!
