Objective

A while back, you and your accomplice Molly made a very bad decision: stealing Marie Laveau’s last remaining bottle of love potion. But then again, love potion is in high demand. Ever since that time,, the spirits have not let you forget it. Drawn to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, your team must follow Molly’s plan, investigate the curse, and find a way to quiet the taunting voices once and for all.

Our Experience

We had fun playing The Voodoo Cemetery at Clue Carré in New Orleans, and we recommend it with a Fun Factor of 7. That Fun Factor is based on the set, which was immersive and fun to explore, the game flow, which satisfyingly opened up new spaces, and the varied and clean puzzles .

Set, Flow and Puzzle Style

One of the room’s most distinctive features is its symbol-decoding mechanic. You will need a specialized device; how to use it and what to do will be part of the fun, which we will not spoil. Decoding symbols is sometimes a tedious escape room busywork task, but Clue Carre makes a thoughtful design choice by providing a reusable board already laid out for the full 26-letter alphabet. Players still need to work out what symbols go with which letters, but this small touch really helps keep the mechanic fun rather than turning it into busywork.

The room unfolds across multiple spaces and does a nice job creating a compact but convincing cemetery-themed adventure with varied terrain and settings. Without giving away specific puzzles, there is a satisfying mix of decoding, observation, searching, and more traditional tactile interactions. We really liked that the room feels rooted in New Orleans. True, this room could be built anywhere in the world — but the local Marie Laveau theme and cemetery setting give it special personality for out-of-town visitors like us.

Another fun factor for us is that many of the puzzle solves have satisfying tactile manipulation of the props and set pieces.

Difficulty and Game Play

We would rate the difficulty as intermediate. There was enough satisfying difficulty to keep two players engaged, and the room has a solid flow once you understand what it is asking you to do. There was one moment where we spun our wheels a little when we knew “what” to do but not quite “how” — when we revisited our technique, we were off and running.

The set is probably the room’s biggest strength. Clue Carre makes great use of relatively small footprint, as the space feels and plays bigger than it is. It has many of the visual touches and feel of what you would expect in a cemetery setting. The room also mixes traditional tactile puzzle solving with a bit of tech in a way that adds fun variety. The ending also adds a fun, unexpected theatrical flourish that clearly elevated the impressiveness of the set quality and was fun to experience.

Our one small note is story-related. The love potion prop we were directed to return looked empty to us, which briefly made us think we were supposed to fill it before returning it or else be in trouble with the spirits. That is a minor point, but a slightly clearer prop would help the final story land more cleanly, as we thought we had more to do when we didn’t.

Team Size and Customer Service

This room is listed for 2 to 6 players, but we think the sweet spot is 2 to 4. It is very approachable for two players, especially if you enjoy working methodically through decoding and observation-based tasks. Three or four should also work well. We would be less inclined to bring more than four, simply because some of the spaces are fairly tight and the amount of content may not justify a larger group.

We met several of the staff and they were all welcoming, friendly and helpful.

Spookiness

This is not a horror room, and we did not find it scary. That said, it is set in a cemetery and leans into a supernatural voodoo atmosphere, so players who are sensitive to spooky themes should expect mood and setting rather than actual scares. That mood and atmosphere may make this an especially good choice to play during the spooky Halloween season.
