Who is the greatest magician of all time?
At the moment, that title belongs to Callisto the Great. But Callisto has issued a challenge: anyone who can break into the magician’s workshop, get past the security systems, solve the traps and riddles, and steal the source of Callisto’s magical power will become the greatest magician in the world.
So yes, your team is breaking into a magician’s workshop. For magic. For glory. And probably because someone really should have thought twice before leaving that challenge lying around.
Our Experience
We had fun playing Magic Heist at 60 to Escape in the Schaumburg area of Chicago. Our Fun Factor 7 is based on a strong mix of puzzle variety, effective game flow, and a cool, highly themed set that gave the room a definite magical aura.
The story is simple and effective: Callisto the Great has dared challengers to steal the source of their magical power. To do that, your team needs to enter the magician’s workshop, work through the protections left behind, and uncover the path to the magic.
The set was one of the highlights of the experience. 60 to Escape did a very nice job creating a space that felt like it belonged to a magician. The room used many of the iconic images and mechanisms associated with stage magic, including top hats, rabbits, hidden surprises, and escape-artist-style elements. The entrance into the set itself was also especially impressive and immediately helped establish the scale of the company’s investment in the experience.
We also liked the game flow. The room moved well through the space, and the puzzles generally connected effectively to the setting. There were some nonlinear elements that could be worked on at the same time, but our group had fun largely moving through the experience together. That worked well here because there were plenty of details to notice, and many of those details eventually mattered.
The puzzles were varied and included making associations, listening for information, exploring the set, finding hidden clues, and sometimes spotting clues that were hidden in plain sight. We enjoyed that range. It gave the room a good rhythm and helped keep the experience active throughout.
We did have one moment where an audio clue was impossible for the three of us to decipher, and we needed help from our game guide. That was the only notable stumble in an otherwise smooth experience.
Of the rooms we played at 60 to Escape, Lockbuster Video was our favorite, but we also recommend Magic Heist. It is a fun, family-appropriate magical adventure with a varied set, a strong theme, and a good mix of puzzles.
Practical Notes
60 to Escape is located inside Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, so allow extra time to park and find your way to the location. We found the instructions in the email confirmation very helpful.
Unlike many escape room locations inside shopping malls, 60 to Escape also has its own restrooms within the facility, which is a nice practical bonus.
They also offer other entertainment options at this location, including virtual miniature golf, which looked interesting, although we did not have time to check it out.
Final Thoughts
We had fun playing Magic Heist, and therefore we recommend it.

Until next time, keep escaping — and remember: if a magician leaves their greatest power sitting around, that is not a trick… that is an invitation — and have fun
