Our Experience
We had fun playing The Haunting in Crimson and recommend it with a Fun Factor of 7. As always, we only recommend rooms where we genuinely have fun—and this one delivers.
This rating is driven by a high volume of puzzles, a strong variety of puzzle types, and a well-executed use of props and interactive elements. The room offers a steady flow of puzzles that keep us engaged throughout – there are some non-linear elements that had us divide and conquer.
🏚️ Set & Atmosphere
The room has a relatively small footprint, but it makes very effective use of the space. It’s well decorated, detailed, and filled with props that support the antique shop theme. And it feels like an old – well-used place – we were definitely transported from a strip mall in Sacramento to some place authentic. We really have more fun when escape rooms can pull that off.
While this is not a horror room – at all - it does carry a noticeable eerie or spooky vibe. The lighting, set decorations, and overall tone create atmosphere without crossing into anything intense or frightening. If you’re sensitive to horror, this should still be very approachable.
🧠 Puzzle Design & Gameplay
This is a puzzle-forward room with a wide variety of solving techniques. You’ll encounter a mix of tactile interactions, prop-based challenges, and some light searching—but we didn’t find the searching excessive or frustrating. In fact we solved one puzzle by longer process of elimination – not realizing that there were clues for a more direct solve that we missed.
The room is mostly linear, but not entirely. There are moments where teams can split up and work on different elements before regrouping, which helps pacing and engagement. There are lots of colorful and meaningful props – and plenty of props to manipulate and explore tactilely.
One of the more challenging aspects we encountered was determining which clues applied to which puzzles at certain points. There were a few moments where we began working on something before having all the necessary information, which led to a brief stall. And as I recall, our requests for help were to ask where we should focus. That said, once the remaining elements opened up, the path forward became clear.
A standout moment for us involved interacting with the environment in a way that tied directly into the “haunting” theme. After a couple of false starts – we discussed what to do next – and the solution clicked—and it was both satisfying and nicely integrated into the room’s concept.
Things to Know
This room offers both public and private booking options. Groups of fewer than four may be paired with other players, while booking four or more guarantees a private experience. Depending on your preferences, this is something to plan for in advance. As mentioned earlier there are some non-linear elements – which we believe is a “must have” for public-booking rooms – As non-linear elements can be worked on at the same time by the different groups.
Also, it bears repeating – that while the room is themed and titled around a haunting, it is not scary—just mildly eerie in tone.
Final Thoughts
The Haunting in Crimson is a content-rich, puzzle-focused experience with strong variety and thoughtful use of space…with a couple of surprisingly advanced props.
It’s a great fit for players who enjoy working through a high volume of puzzles in a themed environment that leans more toward “spooky” than “scary.”
